If Successful With Chantix

Posted by Antonio Howell, M.D. | 8:24:00 AM | , , | 0 comments »

Better health and more is in store...

For patients who have successfully stopped smoking at the end of 12 weeks (CONGRATULATIONS!!), an additional course of 12 weeks treatment with Chantix is recommended to further increase the likelihood of long-term abstinence.
Yes! that is a total of six month but believe me it would be worth it if at the end you never smoke again.

Patients who do not succeed in stopping smoking during 12 weeks of initial therapy, or who relapse after treatment, should be encouraged to make another attempt once factors contributing to the failed attempt have been identified and addressed.

You cannot fail if you keep trying.

Dieting and weight loss is not just for the ladies anymore. Men are joining in with the help of industry giants like NutriSystem and Weight Watchers.

In a clinical trial, the incidence of serious adverse events was low and was similar to another FDA-approved oral contraceptive.

Unscheduled bleeding or spotting is likely to occur while you are taking Lybrel.

The convenience of having no regular menstrual periods should be weighed against the inconvenience of unscheduled or unplanned breakthrough bleeding or spotting.

Because regular monthly bleeding does not occur on Lybrel, an unexpected pregnancy may be difficult to recognize.

If you suspect you may be pregnant or if you have symptoms of pregnancy such as nausea/vomiting or unusual breast tenderness, a pregnancy test should be performed and you should contact your health care professional.

Regarding the effectiveness of Chantix an anonymous reader writes...

I was a die-hard smoker.

I have tried quitting so many times I can't count them.

Cold turkey, the patch, the gum, the inhaler, the lozenges... I've even been hypnotized twice!
None of them did the trick.

I held out hope that maybe Chantix was the answer. It was! I was afraid to quit on day 8 as they suggest, so I kept smoking.

But, on day 9 I only had 2 cigarettes - they both tasted awful and held no pleasure at all for me.

So, on day 10 I went the first day without cigarettes and on a scale from 1 - 10 of difficulty/withdrawl level with 10 being the most difficult, it was a 2.

I couldn't beleive how easy it was. I'm now 5 weeks and 3 days into quitting and owe it all to Chantix.

Already my nagging little cough has gone away and I see how horrible people who do smoke smell!!! Yuck! I'm glad to know I don't smell like that to non-smokers anymore.

And another anonymous reader states...

57 years a smoker and I quit in two weeks.

I had cut my consumption by 2/3 before starting Chantix.

Ten days after starting Chantix I arrived at my "Quit Date."

I smoked 3 cigs in the first three days and NONE SINCE.

That was three months ago. Chantix breaks the need for nicotine.

It does NOT break the habit of reaching for a cigarette.

You have to overcome that one by yourself.

But, it is CERTAINLY A LOT EASIER without the nicotine craving.

I stopped taking Chantix after two prescriptions (56 days.)

For me, CHANTIX WORKS!

Lybrel and Periods

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Lybrel on May 22, 2007, the first continuous use drug product for prevention of pregnancy.

The new contraceptive, Lybrel, comes in a 28 day-pill pack with low-dose combination tablets that contain 90 micrograms of a progestin, levonorgestrel, and 20 micrograms of an estrogen, ethinyl estradiol, which are active ingredients available in other approved oral contraceptives.

Continuous contraception works the same way as the 21 days on-seven days off cycle. It stops the body's monthly preparation for pregnancy by lowering the production of hormones that make pregnancy possible.

Lybrel, a levonorgestrel/estradiol oral contraceptive, is approved, it is the first birth control pill to eliminate periods (and PMS).

Lybrel is taken on a continuous basis with no pill-free days.

During the development phase of Chantix for human consumption...

Studies in rodents have shown that varenicline produces behavioral responses similar to those produced by nicotine.

In rats trained to discriminate nicotine from saline, varenicline produced full generalization to the nicotine cue.

In self-administration studies, the degree to which varenicline substitutes for nicotine is dependent upon the requirement of the task.

Rats trained to self-administer nicotine under easy conditions continued to self-administer varenicline to a degree comparable to that of nicotine, however in a more demanding task, rats self-administered varenicline to a lesser extent than nicotine.

Varenicline pretreatment also reduced nicotine self-administration.

What is Caffeine?

Posted by Antonio Howell, M.D. | 1:42:00 AM | | 0 comments »

Caffeine is a stimulant found in coffee, tea, chocolate, and cola and energy drinks – making it one
of the most widely used drugs in the world.

Caffeine concentration varies according to the plant variety, the growing conditions and the strength of the given brew.

Coffee beans of the arabica strain, grown primarily in Central and South Americacontain approximately 1% caffeine.

Robusta coffee beans, grown in Africa and Indonesia, contain about 2%.

The caffeine content of tea leaves can be as high as 5%.

Although tea leaves generally contain more caffeine by weight than coffee beans, there is usually
more caffeine in a cup of coffee than in a cup of tea because more coffee beans than tea leaves are used to make each regular cup. Also tea is infused, not boiled.

Most researchers now agree that there is little risk of harm when a person consumes less than 600 mg of caffeine a day.

At times of anxiety or stress, or during pregnancy, many doctors now recommend consumption of less than 200 mg a day.

Resveratrol is a naturally occurring phenolic trihydroxystilbene, present in a variety of plants.

A protective effect against atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease through various mechanisms, that may include vasorelaxation and an anti-platelet effect, has been attributed to resveratrol.

The mechanisms by which resveratrol causes vasodilatation are uncertain, but may include inhibition of arachidonate metabolism and induction of nitric oxide (NO) synthesis.

This appealing idea nevertheless needs to be more argued.

After one year of use the author advocates the fact that lipodissolution will not replace any traditional liposuction, but may be helpful in the unfavourable indications of that procedure, thanks to the inflammatory reaction following adipolysis.

Member of the American Association of Immunologist, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Institute of Nutrition. Chairperson for the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program in the Cell Biology Study Section.

The Vitamin D Endocrine System and Autoimmune Disease

Dr Hayes reviewed vitamin D3 biosynthesis, its conversion to the steroid hormone 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 and the role this hormone has in the prevention of autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis, diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease and arthritis.

She showed how exacerbations of multiple sclerosis seem to follow the lack of seasonal sunlight in the more northern latitudes and its correlation to lower vitamin D levels.

The same trend was observed in insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and irritable bowel syndrome.

She then provided data from an animal model of autoimmune encephalomyelitis and the pro-apoptotic influence of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 on inflammatory cells leading to their selective destruction.

During the development of Chantix it was discovered that...

In a human laboratory abuse liability study, a single oral dose of 1 mg varenicline did not produce any significant positive or negative subjective responses in smokers.

In non-smokers, 1 mg varenicline produced an increase in some positive subjective effects, but this was accompanied by an increase in negative adverse effects, especially nausea.

A single oral dose of 3 mg varenicline uniformly produced unpleasant subjective responses in both smokers and non-smokers.

Baldness A Thing of The Past?

Scientists have proven for the first time when testing on mice that it is possible to create entirely new follicles from which hairs can be grown, meaning it may be possible to replace hair follicles that have become dysfunctional in humans.

The application of this technology is still being developed...
So in 10 years time, if further research proves that a cure for baldness is possible, would it really make a difference? For the bald man this is an exciting prospect - it would ensure areas of complete baldness could one day be replaced with thick and healthy hair. But for those beginning to lose their hair, or even those who have lost a reasonable amount of hair, something can already be done. Proof of this can be found by taking a look at the Belgravia Centre's

A Cure for Baldness?

Posted by Antonio Howell, M.D. | 10:12:00 PM | , | 0 comments »

These mice make an excellent model for scientist to figure out a cure for balding...

To learn how a gene called Hairless regulates hair growth, scientists studied a line of completely bald mice that lacks the Hairless gene. These mice start with a full coat of fur, but once it falls out it never grows back.

Lacking Hairless is a rare genetic disorder and is not the reason why a person goes bald. But the findings could help scientists better understand the signals guiding the regrowth of hair. This, in turn, could aid the development of potential treatments for baldness.

During the development of Chantix for human use it was discovered that...

Abrupt discontinuation of Chantix was associated with an increase in irritability and sleep disturbances in up to 3% of patients.

This suggests that, in some patients, varenicline may produce mild physical dependence which is not associated with addiction.

Varenicline is not a controlled substance.

Fewer than 1 out of 1000 patients reported euphoria in clinical trials with Chantix.

Sibutramine (MERIDIA) for Weight Loss

Posted by Antonio Howell, M.D. | 5:21:00 PM | , , | 0 comments »

Sibutramine (MERIDIA) is a drug used for the treatment of obesity. It is marketed in the US by Abbott.

This drugs decreases hunger by inhibiting norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine reuptake in the brain.

Sibutramine is not intended to be used alone but as a part of a decreased calorie and exercise plan.

It is very important to take Meridia while under the care and supervision of a doctor or health professional because it can cause what?

Increased mortality, clot formation and strokes among the concerns when these drugs are used to maintain an hemoglobin level greater than 12g/dL .

FDA has issued a Public Health Advisory which summarizes several recent safety concerns with the use of erythropoiesis stimulating agents (ESAs).

These products, marketed as Procrit (epoetin alfa), Aranesp (darbepoetin alfa), and Epogen (epoetin alfa), stimulate the production of red blood cells. They are used to reduce the number of red blood cell transfusions given to patients with certain serious conditions who are, or may become, anemic.

FDA is re-evaluating the safe use of these products because a number of recent studies have shown an increased risk of serious and life-threatening side effects and a greater number of deaths in patients treated with ESAs.

In one study of patients with chronic kidney failure there was an increased number of deaths and non-fatal heart attacks, strokes, heart failure, and blood clots when product dosages were adjusted to maintain hemoglobin levels higher than 12 g/dL.

In another study, patients with head and neck cancer receiving radiation therapy had a higher chance of death and faster tumor growth when ESA doses achieved hemoglobin levels higher than 12 g/dL.

Another study showed that cancer patients who were not on chemotherapy died sooner and did not require fewer blood transfusions when they were given these agents.

And in yet another study, patients scheduled for orthopedic surgery who received ESAs to reduce perioperative blood transfusions had more blood clots than those not given an ESA.

The FDA Advisory contains a number of recommendations for prescribing these agents:

  • Consider both the risks of transfusions and those of ESAs when deciding to prescribe these products.
  • Adjust the dose of ESA to maintain the lowest hemoglobin level necessary to avoid the need for transfusions.
  • Monitor patients' hemoglobin levels to ensure they don't exceed 12 g/dL.

In addition, prescribers should understand that there are no data to support claims that ESAs can improve quality of life for cancer patients whose anemia is caused by chemotherapy, or for HIV-positive patients whose anemia is caused by AZT. Also, these agents have not been shown to improve the outcomes of chemotherapy treatment.

The manufacturers of Procrit, Aranesp and Epogen have agreed to change the labeling for these products to reflect the new safety information and to provide additional instructions for their use.

Xpert EV viral meningitis test by Cepheid cuts down diagnosis time from one week to a couple of hours:

FDA recently cleared for marketing a rapid test to help detect the presence of viral meningitis. The test is called Xpert EV, and was developed by the company Cepheid. When used in combination with other laboratory tests, Xpert EV can help distinguish between viral meningitis and bacterial meningitis, which is less common, but more severe.

Typically, diagnostic tests for meningitis can take up to a week to get results, but results from the Xpert EV test are available in two and one-half hours. Since bacterial meningitis can be deadly within as little as two days, patients who have viral meningitis are frequently treated with antibiotics as a safeguard against the more dangerous bacterial disease. This test should help physicians manage patients appropriately and prevent unnecessary treatment with antibiotics.

The accuracy of the Xpert EV test was confirmed in a study at six clinical sites. About 250 patient samples were tested. Ninety-six percent of patients who tested positive did have viral meningitis and 97 percent of patients who tested negative did not have viral meningitis.

Eliminate Wrinkles

Posted by Antonio Howell, M.D. | 1:11:00 PM | , , , , | 0 comments »

If you want to take the guesswork out of your skin-care regimen, try these reliable ways to improve and maintain your skin's youthful appearance.

  • Protect your skin from the sun. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light speeds up the natural aging process of your skin, causing wrinkles and rough, blotchy skin. In fact, sun exposure is the No. 1 reason for aging signs in the skin, including uneven pigmentation. Protect your skin — and prevent future wrinkles — by limiting the time you spend in the sun and always wearing protective clothing and hats. Also, use sunscreen when outdoors, even in winter.
  • Choose products with built-in sunscreen. When selecting skin-care products, choose those with a built-in sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. Also, be sure to select products that block both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Use moisturizers. Dry skin turns plump skin cells into shriveled ones, creating fine lines and wrinkles long before you're due. Though moisturizers can't prevent wrinkles, they can temporarily mask tiny lines and creases.
  • Don't smoke. Smoking causes narrowing of the blood vessels in the outermost layers of your skin. It also damages collagen and elastin — fibers that give your skin its strength and elasticity. As a result, skin begins to sag and wrinkle prematurely.

If you're concerned about the appearance of your skin, see your dermatologist.

He or she can help you create a personalized skin-care plan by assessing your skin type, evaluating your skin's condition and recommending products likely to be effective.

If you're looking for more dramatic results, a dermatologist can recommend medical treatments for wrinkles, including prescription creams, Botox injections or skin resurfacing techniques.[...] *What Free Food Supplement is Proven to Reduce Wrinkles?*

Are You an Alcoholic?

Many doctors and help professionals apply a four part questionnaire to determine if their patient has a problem with alcohol abuse.

Keep in mind that patients frequently underestimate their consumption.

This underestimation may be attributed to denial, one of the hallmarks of the disease process of substance abuse.

The CAGE questioning technique is as follows:

  • C - Has anyone ever felt you should Cut down on your drinking?

  • A - Have people Annoyed you by criticizing your drinking?

  • G - Have you ever felt Guilty about your drinking?

  • E - Have you ever had a drink first thing in the morning (Eye-opener) to steady your nerves or to get rid of a hangover?

A single positive response to the CAGE questions is considered suggestive of an alcohol problem, and 2 or more positive responses indicate the presence of such a problem with a sensitivity and specificity approximately 90% in most studies.

Many ex-smokers say quitting was the hardest thing they ever did. Quitting is also hard because smoking is a big part of your life.

  • You enjoy holding cigarettes and puffing on them.
  • You may smoke when you are stressed, bored, or angry.
  • After months and years of lighting up, smoking becomes part of your daily routine.
  • You may light up without even thinking about it.
  • You’re probably addicted to nicotine.

Nicotine is in all tobacco products. It makes you feel calm and satisfied. At the same time, you feel more alert and focused. The more you smoke, the more nicotine you need to feel good. Soon, you don’t feel “normal” without nicotine.

It takes time to break free from nicotine addiction. It may take more than one try to quit for good.

So don’t give up too soon. You will feel good again.

“Enzyte is more successful subtracting from the male wallet than it is adding to the male organ,” Schardt says (a CSPI senior nutritionist -The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI)) in a news release. “It’s basically just an expensive placebo.”

“It’s really extraordinary that this product is advertised on television, in newspapers, making these claims that just have no basis,” says David Schardt, a CSPI senior nutritionist, in a news release. "It’s really too bad that the FTC, the agency that regulates advertising, has been so slow in protecting consumers."

Enzyte is a supplement advertised on television as a "once daily tablet for natural male enhancement", manufactured by Berkeley Premium Nutraceuticals of Cincinnati, Ohio.
“People are so frustrated or desperate, and they don’t want to spend too much money, so they buy these things,” Jack Mydlo, MD, professor and chair of urology at Temple University School of Medicine.

Enzyte Answers the Critics

Answering the critics, Enzyte makers defend their product:

“Berkeley stands behind its Enzyte formulas.

Medical professionals have established a correlation between reduced cardiovascular function and reduced erectile function...

There is substantial data that shows that ginkgo biloba assists with circulatory problems.

Further, indications that Korean red ginseng may be beneficial in improving the quality of male erections comes from traditional use, in vitro, and animal experiences, as well as a few clinical trials.

Finally, Berkeley strongly promotes that its products -- including Enzyte -- work best in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle and many of our customers report this to be the case of Enzyte.”

FDA's Medwatch program

Posted by Antonio Howell, M.D. | 11:34:00 PM | | 0 comments »

FDA's Medwatch program allows health care professionals and consumers to report to the FDA serious problems with the medical products they prescribe, dispense, or use. These reports, along with follow-up investigations, can help to identify important safety concerns.

Take the example of the antibiotic Zyvox. Within the first six months of Zyvox's marketing, FDA began getting MedWatch reports of myelosupression from clinicians who suspected that the drug might be responsible. After investigating the problem, we worked with the manufacturer to change the Zyvox labeling to warn about the potential for myelosuppression.

Chantix works to maintain long term abstinence in its users:

Studies...included 40 weeks of post-treatment follow-up. In each study, Chantix treated patients were more likely to maintain abstinence throughout the follow-up period than were patients treated with placebo.
------

Another study assessed the effect of an additional 12 weeks of Chantix therapy on the
likelihood of long-term abstinence.

Patients in this study (n=1927) were treated with open-label Chantix 1 mg BID for 12 weeks.

Patients who had stopped smoking by Week 12 were then randomized to double-blind treatment with Chantix (1 mg BID) or placebo for an additional 12-weeks and then followed for 28 weeks post-treatment.

The continuous abstinence rate from Week 13 through Week 24 was higher for subjects continuing treatment with Chantix (70%) than for subjects switching to placebo (50%).

Superiority to placebo was also maintained during 28 weeks post-treatment follow-up (Chantix 54% versus placebo 39%).

What is Restless legs syndrome (RLS)?

Posted by Antonio Howell, M.D. | 6:38:00 AM | , | 2 comments »

Restless legs syndrome is defined as uncontrollable urges to move the lower limbs in order to stop uncomfortable, painful or odd sensations in the body, most commonly in the legs.

Moving modulates the sensations, providing temporary relief. The sensations and need to move may return immediately after movement, or at a later time.

RLS may start at any age, including early childhood, and is a progressive disease for a certain portion of those afflicted, although the symptoms have disappeared permanently in some sufferers.

RLS affects about 8-10% of the US population.

Men and women are affected equally. It may begin at any age, even in infants and young children. Most people who are affected severely are middle-aged or older.

What Is Restless Legs Syndrome?
The diagnosis of restless legs syndrome requires the presence of the following four criteria [ref.]:

  • An urge to move the legs due to an unpleasant feeling in the legs.
  • Onset or worsening of symptoms when at rest or not moving around frequently.
  • Partial or complete relief by movement (e.g., walking) for as long as the movement continues.
  • Symptoms that occur primarily at night and that can interfere with sleep or rest.

The severity of disease is judged by the frequency of these symptoms, which can range from less than once a month to many times a day. Recommended treatments include stretching exercises and less caffeine for intermittent disease and various prescription drugs (e.g., benzodiazepines and dopamine agonists) for daily symptoms [ref.]. Sutent and Lung Cancer

Sunitinib (marketed as Sutent, previously known as SU11248) is a small molecule receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor that is approved for the treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) and renal cell carcinoma (RCC).

In a separate study, Sutent shrank tumors in 51 percent of patients in the advanced stages of lung cancer, for whom other forms of treatment did not work. This lung cancer study was "phase 2," meaning that it was not as advanced as the "phase 3" kidney cancer study. Phase 3 is generally the most advanced stage of study before submitting a drug to the Food and Drug Administration for approval.

Dr. Mark Socinski, the lead researcher in the lung cancer study who is an associate professor at the University of North Carolina's oncology program, acknowledged that the study was still in the early stages, but said that Sutent "could have a place in the treatment of lung cancer, either alone or in combination with other agents."

Hiatal hernias are the most common of the diaphragm hernias. There exist two types

  • the sliding hiatal hernia (pictured here) and
  • paraesophageal hiatal hernia

Most small hiatal hernias cause no problems.

But larger hernias may cause

  • heartburn,
  • belching or
  • chest pain

when stomach acids back up into your esophagus.

These signs and symptoms tend to become worse when you

  • lean forward,
  • strain,
  • lift heavy objects or
  • lie down, and

they can also worsen during pregnancy.

In rare cases, the part of your stomach that protrudes into your chest cavity may become twisted (strangulated) or have its blood supply cut off, leading to a very serious medical emergency.

Antiretroviral drug.

Used in HIV infections in combination with other antiretroviral agents.

Ziagen is a associated with an idiosyncratic hypersensitivity reaction (lactic acidosis, hepatic steatosis).

Chantix is nothing less than a "Miricle".

My husband is 44yrs. old. He started sneaking and smoking when he was 5yrs old. He started smoking full time when he was 13yrs. old. He averaged smoking FIVE carton's a month.

We were married six years ago, and the smoke and smell was killing me. I saw something on T.V. about Chantix, I asked my husband if he would try it since he has tried everything else and nothing seemed to work, and he said he would.

He went to our pharmacy to see if you needed a prescription for it, They hadn't even heard of it.

So when my husband went to his physician for a check-up he asked about it. He told them I had heard about it on T.V. and researched and found it on the internet. His Dr. knew about it and wrote him a script, we went to the pharmacy and they had to special order it.

His insurance even paid some on it. They got it in the next day and he started it.

You are supposed to smoke during the first week while it gets into you system but he didn't last a week after about three days he was finished and hasn't smoked since.

He took it for two months just as a precautionary thing. He now tells everyone about it and says he could do a commercial and not tell a lie to sell the product.

He calls hisself the Chantix Poster Boy...He looks healthier. Can taste food better, breathe better. And can't stand to be around anyone smoking or has been smoking he says it makes him sick.

He said I had no idea I stunk that bad. He tells everyone that if he can quit after 39 years ANYONE can Quit.

Thanks to whoever created Chantix. It is an AWESOME product. -TheDale's

Chantix works great. We'll be hearing alot about this drug as more people have success with it. I took it for 30 days total and quit smoking on day 10. -Tom

Ive been on Chantix for a month and it is great. It reduces the cravings. There are minor side effects but nothing that will ruin your day. -Nicki

What is Tamoxifen?

Posted by Antonio Howell, M.D. | 4:01:00 AM | , | 0 comments »

Tamoxifen is used as adjuvant therapy in breast cancer. Tamoxifen is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM).

Tamoxifen decreases the risk of recurrence by 42% and the absolute risk of death by 22% in women with tumors that are

  • estrogen receptor-positive or
  • progesterone receptor-positive, or
  • both.

It also decreases the incidence of breast cancer in the contralateral(other non-diseased) breast by about 50%.

When tamoxifen was added to chemotherapy in patients with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer, it reduced recurrence by 25% to 30% compared with chemotherapy alone.

What is the Big Deal with Obesity?

Posted by Antonio Howell, M.D. | 6:02:00 PM | , | 2 comments »

We need to get a hold of this obesity problem that is affecting not only this generation but the generation to come:

Roughly 65 percent (or approximately 130 million) of U.S. adults are overweight or obese, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Research suggests that overweight individuals appear to be on the pathway to obesity.

Overweight and obesity are associated with an increased risk of developing health problems such as
  • hypertension,
  • type 2 diabetes and
  • heart disease.

Factors that can contribute to overweight include
  • an abundance of high-calorie foods,
  • low levels of physical activity,
  • behavior,
  • environment, and
  • genetics

Multiple studies have shown that a modest reduction in weight improves health outcomes significantly in overweight or obese people.

In 2003-2004, 17.1%(over 12.5 million) of children and teens, aged 2-19 years were overweight.

Which Is The Best Fat Burner?

The best fat burner is one that prevents you from absorbing the fat in the first place. Then there is nothing to burn...makes sense to me.

And the makers of Alli the new over-the-counter weight loss pill think so too. The FDA as of Feb 2007 gave GSK final approval to market Alli (Al-eye) in the US.

Alli would come in 60mg pill to be taken with every meal. There are 120 tablets per bottle so that is a 40-day supply of the pills.

Only if it works better this time:

Alli is the first weight-loss drug to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration for sale in the United States over the counter, no prescription necessary. It works by preventing the body from absorbing some of the fat one eats.

Alli is a version of Xenical, a prescription weight-loss drug sold by Roche. GlaxoSmithKline acquired the American rights to Xenical in 2005 and has spent much of the time since then figuring out how to master a tricky balancing act.

What is Gastroenteritis?

Posted by Antonio Howell, M.D. | 10:31:00 AM | | 0 comments »

Gastroenteritis is an inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract.

Gastroenteritis can be caused by viral, bacterial, or parasitic infections.

Common routes of infection include:

* Food (especially seafood)
* Contaminated water
* Contact with an infected person
* Unwashed hands
* Dirty utensils

The main symptom of gastroenteritis is diarrhea. When the colon becomes infected during gastroenteritis, it loses its ability to retain fluids, which causes the person’s feces to become watery.

Because of the symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea, people who have gastroenteritis can become dehydrated very quickly. It is very important to watch for signs of dehydration, which include:

* Extreme thirst
* Urine that is darker in color
* Dry skin
* Dry mouth
* Sunken cheeks or eyes
* In infants, dry diapers (for more than 4-6 hours)

Gastroenteritis is estimated to cause about 5 to10 million deaths per year worldwide, and about 10,000 deaths per year in the United States.

Anyone can get the disease.
